Why you should use organic cotton period care

When it comes to period care, there’s a lot to choose from. But is there a period care that’s better than the rest? Well, we certainly think so! Today, we take a deep dive into organic cotton and why it’s the best period care choice.

What is organic cotton?

Non-organic cotton is dubbed as the ‘world’s dirtiest crop’. Organic cotton is the sustainable alternative. It’s chemical free, meaning it’s grown without the use of harmful synthetic pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified seeds. Grown using environmentally friendly and sustainable methods, which promote the health of the soil and local ecosystem, certified organic cotton minimises the impact of cotton farming on the environment. What is the Soil Association?

Soil Association is a leading organic certifier & charity offering a huge range of organic and sustainable certification schemes across food, farming, catering, beauty & wellbeing, fashion & textiles and forestry.

Soil Association Certification are proud to be a founding member of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and are their leading certification body in the UK.

GOTS are a voluntary processing standard, which regulate the manufacturing stages of the textile supply chain such as the ginning, spinning, knitting/weaving, cut & manufacture for producers and brands/retailers. The standard stipulates requirements for both ecological and labour conditions in addition to ensuring the integrity of organically produced raw materials

Why is organic cotton better for period care?

Combats climate change

Organic farmers use natural methods to grow cotton, not fossil-fuel based fertilisers.

Saves precious water

Organic farming builds healthy soils, which act like a sponge, soaking up water during floods and holding it for longer in times of drought. Hazardous synthetic pesticides and fertilisers are banned in organic farming, so rivers, lakes and drinking water are kept cleaner too.

Helps farmers feed their families

Organic farmers grow other crops alongside their cotton. These crops can provide farming families and their communities with a stable, accessible, abundant, and diverse food supply and another source of income. Certified organic cotton is grown without the use of child labour and exploitation, workers are treated fairly and ethically.

Gives control to farmers not GM companies

Genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned in organic farming, so farmers are not reliant on GM companies. Instead, they save their seeds, and work with the environment in a long-term, sustainable way.

Eliminates hazardous synthetic pesticides

Organic farmers use natural methods like crop rotation to control pests and diseases, not chemicals. Hazardous synthetic pesticides used in non-organic farming can damage ecosystems, poison waterways, and endanger workers. It’s estimated that conventional cotton alone is responsible for 16% of all insecticides sold worldwide.

Naturally breathable & highly absorbent

Organic cotton can help reduce irritation and discomfort during your period and also help to prevent yeast & bacterial infections. Plus, it’s a highly absorbent material that can help keep you dry and comfortable during your period.

Biodegradable material

Organic cotton is also biodegradable and will not harm the environment after use. In fact our pads & tampons biodegrade faster than a banana when composted in perfect conditions!
